I will admit that there is one type of worksheet that I used in the past and found relatively beneficial, although it had a different kind of flaw. For my Basic Math, Pre-Algebra, and Algebra classes, I had several books of ”self-checking” worksheets. These worksheets had puns or puzzle questions at the top, and as the students worked the problems they were given some kind of code for choosing a letter to match that answer. If they worked the problems correctly, the letters eventually answered the pun or riddle. Students enjoyed these worksheets, but there are a couple problem areas even with these worksheets. Some students would get the answer to the riddle early and then work backward from letter to problem answer, so they weren’t learning or practicing anything.
During my teaching career, an often stated statistic was that for information to be considered learned it would need to be repeated or practiced 4 to 10 times. More recently, that number of needed repetitions has increased to anywhere from 20 to 50 times. Currently, the word repetition is being used in a guarded fashion. But the main point is that it does take many repetitions for information to be transferred into long-term memory and to be considered learned.
Monitoring Comprehension – It is imperative that students learn to recognize when they are not obtaining meaning from a selected text. Students may read the selection fluently but gain no understanding from it. Students must learn what steps to take when reading for comprehension produces no results.
The Worksheet Activate event is a Microsoft Excel event that works on many different versions of Excel. It designed to run a script of code every time the specific worksheet is activated. This event has no required or optional parameters. This event can be used to show a hidden a worksheet upon its activation or it can pop up a login or data form.
Check the basic layout of the worksheet before buying it. Is the layout cramped or well spaced? How good are the visuals on the page? Can they keep the attention of little children? What is the quality of the content on the worksheets? The text for example, should not contain long sentences. This can make it difficult for the child to read. The language should also be simple so that children can understand what is written. Other things to look for are the quality of paper used and the packaging of the worksheets.
Providing enough spaces between the lines is also another key. Another tip is to always simplify the instructions. Complex vocabulary can be very misleading and often times, they do add stress to the student.
