Never allow boredom to set in. We know now that when learning is fun and exciting, the brain is actually growing many new dendrites that make connections with many other dendrites. The more connections the better. We also know now that boredom destroys dendrites. Small children quickly become bored with worksheets, especially skill and drill worksheets. Yet another reason to avoid skill and drill worksheets like the plague.
Is it easy? No way. It is hard to let yourself go and dream big. Too often we get caught up in the rat race of living month to month, moment to moment, those picky details. We do not let ourselves explore our true desires. Please realize this is not about what you can have. Those are just things. Things will not keep you happy. When you work towards the 4 hour work week, you will have the time to do the activities you always wanted to do. Ownership of ”things” will not help you do these activities. See what Tim Ferriss says about owning things and the dreamlining worksheet.
Distinguishing Story Structure: Story structure can be defined by the way in which the text is arranged or organized into a plot. For example, by understanding characters, setting, problem/conflict, climax, and validation, students increase comprehension. By understanding headings, subheadings, picture graphs and bold words, students also increase comprehension.
Math worksheets are often assigned as an independent activity, however research indicates that communication and discourse are needed to build a deep understanding of math topics. Students need opportunities to explore mathematical ideas in different ways and to build their own connections. This involves communicating their ideas, listening to the ideas of others, arguing a viewpoint, describing, and explaining. Math worksheets are rarely used as a catalyst for conversation. Instead of assigning worksheets, find activities that encourage discourse, such as ”number talks,” or collaborative group work. During the session, be sure to require students to explain their thinking and listen to the strategies and thinking of their peers.
We have come a long way as teachers since those purple-ink mimeograph machines introduced us to worksheets, so let’s be vigilant! Avoid lower-level-thinking worksheets, do not use too many worksheets (even good ones) and NEVER use worksheets as busy work.
Even the youngest students–kindergarteners–will benefit from printable worksheets. They will help your little one learn and master basic concepts in way that will capture and hold their attention. Remember that small kids enjoy doing things rather than simply reading or listening. For this reason, attractive, well-illustrated worksheets with something to do will make learning fun for them. What’s more, completing your worksheet will give the child a tremendous sense of fulfillment.
